The Mission of the Counseling Department at Aberdeen Highs School is to provide a comprehensive counseling program that attends to the personal/social, academic, and career preparation/college planning needs of all students. Our goal is to promote a commitment to life-long learning, personal, and academic growth and to aid students in becoming responsible, culturally aware, and productive members of society. The school counselor will work in partnership with other educators, parents/guardians, community contacts to support students.
Services include group and individual counseling, small group counseling, classroom guidance, academic support, crisis intervention, consultation, collaboration, referrals, career and college planning, and student and family advocacy.
Belief: I believe that every student has the ability to succeed in one way or another. Each student is unique and has his/hers on strengths that he/she brings to the table.

MS Tucking Association Foundation Scholarship,up to $2,000. Deadline is June 23, 2020.
Any college freshman, sophomore, junior or senior in good standing, attending an accredited community college, four year college or university in Mississippi and in addition to the above, who falls within any of the classifications listed below, is eligible for a scholarship:
1. Students who have a parent or spouse actively employed in the trucking industry.
2. Students who had a parent or spouse fatally injured on the job, while employed in the trucking industry.
3. Students who are planning to earn a degree in a field of study involving the trucking transportation industry.
4. Students who are children or a spouse of an independent contractor affiliated with a trucking company.
5. Students who have a parent actively employed with or that have a parent that was fatally injured while on the job as an Enforcement Officer of either the MS Highway Patrol Motor Carrier Division or MDOT’s Motor Carrier Division.

There are no conditions or outside requirements for this essay. Please keep submissions to 5 paragraphs and 600 words at the absolute maximum. This is not a standardized test. While spelling, punctuation, and general cohesiveness will make your essay easier to read, and therefore judge, you are not being graded. The winning submission will be one which clearly conveys a non-fictional story of your life before and after an auto accident.

Local scholarships are provided through family memorials, local clubs and organizations. They become available spring semester. When the scholarships start coming in there is a box outside my office for students to find copies of the scholarships. Please read the scholarship request carefully and follow through with what is needed. Please DO NOT wait till the last minute because you may need something from me and I may not be available.

The Mississippi office or student financial aid uses the most recent FAFSA transaction to determine an applicant’s Pell Grant eligibility. MTAG awards up to $500 per academic year for freshmen and sophomores and $1,000 per academic year for juniors and seniors.

The higher education legislative plan for needy students grant is available to Mississippi resident students with a 20 ACT or higher, 2.5 GPA or higher and completion of the HELP core curriculum, who can demonstrate financial need. The HELP grant pays full tuition at public Mississippi colleges and universities (or the equivalent at a private Mississippi College or University).

If you are a graduate of a Monroe county school and have a 2.5 GPA you may qualify for the ICC tuition waiver. You need to have taken the ACT, applied for the MTAG and filled out the FAFSA. You must be enrolled at ICC for a minimum of 15 hours and you must maintain the 2.5 GPA.

Log on to your college of interest and make sure that you have the subjects you need to apply to the college.
ACT.org https://www.act.org: Seniors who receive free or reduced lunches qualify for an ACT fee waiver. They are allowed two (2) ACT fee waivers between their Junior and senior year. Students may ask me for a fee waiver and/or an ACT flyer with the instructions on how to sign up.
Transcript request: Current students do not have to pay for a transcript. Transcript request are done by me, they are in the mail box on my door. Fill out a transcript request form, put down the school or schools it needs to go to, and put the form in the blue folder. I will do my best to prepare transcripts on Monday’s, Wednesday’s & Friday’s about 8:00 am. College/university transcripts are stamped and sealed and mailed directly to the college/university. If you need one for yourself or for a scholarship I will hang it on the door when they are ready to be picked up. Be sure to put down on the request form what you need. If it is not a local school I need the name of the school and an address.
Seniors can have two (2) college visits that will be excused; however, all work has to be made up. You also have to get something from the college proving you were there.
