It's Special Education Day!
SPED Day
It all began in 1972 with the Mills versus the Board of Education lawsuit filed in the U.S. District Court in the District of Columbia. The court deemed the denial of publicly funded education for special children, including those with learning disabilities, to be illegal. This legal precedent set the stage for subsequent legislation, such as the Education for All Handicapped Children Act of 1975, which was endorsed and enacted by President Gerald Ford on November 29, 1972. This Act marked the nation's first official law specifically addressing special education.
States that received federal funds were obligated to ensure complete access to education for children with special needs. In 1990, this landmark legislation underwent a name change to become the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act, or IDEA. Over time, amendments have been introduced to address emerging issues and ensure that the educational standards for children with special needs align with those of the general education system.
IDEA not only defined the rights of children with learning disabilities but also laid the foundation for collaboration between teachers and families, ensuring the availability of services and resources for support.
This day is a reminder of the importance of inclusion, equity, and the boundless potential within EVERY child.

Aberdeen School District Receives Thanksgiving Food Gift Box Donation for Families in Need
Aberdeen, MS — November 21, 2025 — The Aberdeen School District is honored to announce the generous donation of Thanksgiving Food Gift Boxes provided by Paul Kelly and Kel-Tech Inc. Security Services. These gift boxes were delivered to three families in need, ensuring they will enjoy a warm and meaningful holiday meal.
This act of kindness reflects Mr. Kelly’s ongoing commitment to supporting the Aberdeen community. The district extends heartfelt appreciation to Mr. Paul Kelly, Lt. Taggart White, Officer David Tedford, and the entire Kel-Tech Inc. team for their dedication, generosity, and service.
Their contribution demonstrates the powerful impact of community partnerships and reinforces the district’s mission to support students and families beyond the classroom.
“On this Thanksgiving, we want to share our gratitude. We're thankful for the trust you place in us, the teamwork we experience every day, and the support that helps us keep your community safe. While we watch over everyone, we're reminded how blessed we are to be a part of a place that feels like family. Happy Thanksgiving from Kel-Tech to each and every one of you,” said Lt. Taggart White.
