What is Aberdeen Parent University?

A Parent University is a parent engagement program designed to promote successful partnerships among parents, schools, and communities. The program provides free activities and workshops for parents to enhance their personal and family’s well-being.

The objectives of the APU are the following:

  • Provide resources and training for parents and families to help support children’s academic success,

  • Allow families to collaborate with schools, community organizations, and the school district to fully participate in their child’s education.

  • To empower parents and guardians to help students improve academics in the classroom.

  • APU will implement organized and planned sessions designed to support parents' efforts to enhance their children's health and development.

The Research Says Parent Universities Help…

  • Increase Student Performance in the Classroom and on Standardized Tests
  • Improve Student Attendance
  • Have Better Social Skills
  • Decrease Disciplinary Issues
  • Improve Parent-Teacher and Teacher-Student Relationships
  • Less retention issues
  • Increased enrollment in challenging courses

Expectations of the APU

APU will provide 7 sessions designed to build and strengthen parents’ capacity as change agents to support their children’s education.

Sessions Timeline: October 2022-April 2023

Graduation: May 2023. Parents must attend 6 of the 7 sessions to graduate.

Monthly sessions will be held the 2nd Tuesday of each month.

At the conclusion of the program, parents will receive an ASD Parent University Diploma, be recognized at a local meeting, and participate in a celebratory ceremony at the end of all completed sessions.

The most accurate predictors of student achievement in school are not family income or social status, but the extent to which the family creates a home environment that encourages learning, communicates high yet reasonable expectations for the child’s achievement, and becomes involved in the child’s education at school.
